Afternoon Tea: Miruvor, Lembas Bread, Honey Mead Cake
BY Alison Wiebe
Every hobbit knows that the best way to follow up a hearty luncheon is with an afternoon tea! Journey to the enchanting elvish realm of Lothlorien and enjoy a variety of splendid elvish fare: the floral cordial Miruvor, lavender-scented lembas, and a spiced mead honey cake.
Afternoon Tea
After such a substantial luncheon it’s only natural that hungry hobbits eagerly look forward to a lavish afternoon tea. As dearly as hobbits love simple, hearty Shire food, they certainly won’t turn their nose up when offered a bountiful feast during their travels. Inspired by their travels through Rivendell and Lothlorien, our hobbits sit down to a delightful afternoon tea of Miruvor, Lavender Lembas bread, and Spiced Mead Honey Cake.
“Though you have been our guests,” said Celeborn, “you have not yet eaten with us, and we bid you, therefore, to a parting feast, here between the flowing waters that will bear you far from Lórien.”
-The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (Book 2 Chapter 8: Farewell to Lórien)
This elvish feast is the ideal mid-afternoon refreshment to tide hungry hobbits over until dinner!
Afternoon Tea Menu
Miruvor
Made from the flowers of the gardens of Valinor, Miruvor is the famed elvish draught that can restore a man, or hobbit, to vigor and strength. This elvish tonic is just what feasting hobbits need to keep up their strength for the feats to come. Sweet mead is blended with elderflower liqueur and honey to recreate this revitalizing elixir. Lavender Lembas Bread
This elvish way-bread is a popular snack for travellers providing much-needed sustenance on long journeys. Made from the corn of Valinor, the recipe for lembas is known only to elvish women. Fresh lavender gives a subtle floral flavour to these sweet cakes. Wrap them in leaves for travelling if you prefer, or just enjoy them with a glass of Miruvor at your next afternoon tea! Spiced Mead Honey Cake
While enjoying lembas bread Gimli mentions that the elvish way-bread is better even than the honey cakes of the beornings. Honey and spices give this cake incredible flavour while a sweet syrup of mead and honey poured over the cake keeps it moist and delicious for days. Make this spiced mead honey cake and you can judge for yourself if the elvish lembas bread really is better than the honey cakes of the beornings. Get the recipe for Spiced Mead Honey Cake.
