Embrace the Danish custom of hygge living with this collection of warm and cozy recipes!
The holidays may be over but there are still months of winter ahead. My favourite way to battle the cold and dark of winter is by embracing hygge – the Danish concept of coziness. Hygge, pronounced hoo-gah, celebrates coziness, togetherness, and taking pleasure in the simple things of life. To learn more about hygge living and the many ways to incorporate it into your life check out my post – Hygge: the Art of Cozy.
The collection of hygge recipes I have prepared here is a great introduction to this amazing Danish custom. One of the easiest ways to incorporate the art of hygge living into your life is with food and drink. Sharing some hygge comfort food with your family and friends is a great way to spread joy and feelings of togetherness. Grab a warm blanket and settle next to a cozy fireplace and enjoy these comforting hygge recipes!
Warm and Cozy Drinks
Sipping a warm drink is one of the easiest ways to experience the contentment of hygge living. A cup of tea is nice but why not try an indulgent cup of hot chocolate. Rich and frothy and topped with a boozy whipped cream, my Chestnut Hot Chocolate is the perfect winter brew to sip by a cozy fireplace. If you like white chocolate, try my Turkish Delight Hot Chocolate made with pistachio and rosewater.
Sweet Treats
The cold months are perfect for staying indoors and baking up a storm! A warm beverage isn’t complete without a sweet treat accompaniment. Buttery, flaky homemade croissants are my idea of the perfect hygge comfort food. Apple pie is synonymous with comfort – try my toffee apple pie for a sweet twist on this classic dessert. For a more decadent treat, try these marmalade sweet rolls. Soft rolls are filled with tangy marmalade and smothered in a sweet orange glaze in this ideal hygge comfort food.
Comforting Mains and Sides
Hygge recipes don’t necessarily have to be sweet; these comforting main dishes and sides will spark those feelings of contentment and well-being without bringing a sugar rush. Packed with seasonal root vegetables and topped with flaky pastry, my winter vegetable pie is a great vegetarian entrée to enjoy by a cozy fireplace. Slow simmering and with a rich and hearty broth, my beef, stout, and barley soup will warm you up in no time. This chicken smothered in a whiskey-spiked mushroom cream sauce is easy to make and elegant enough to serve to company. A bowl of warming Autumn Harvest Bisque is perfect on a cold day. For the ultimate in rich indulgence, it doesn’t get much better than creamy potatoes dauphinoise.
Hygge Living
Enjoying warm drinks and comforting foods are one way to bring the simple pleasures of hygge living into your daily life. Even better if you can share them with your loved ones!
